What is RT-PCR to diagnose COVID-19?

COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It is an RNA virus that causes a cell to multiply and survive in healthy conditions. The RT-PCR test is therefore for SARS-CoV-2 RNA identification. The RNA is converted to DNA using a process known as the "Reverse Transcription" for virus detection.

SARS-CoV-2 RNA is generally detectable in respiratory paths. In this context, a sample is collected from both upper and lower respiratory specimens (such as nasal and nasopharyngeal swabs, sputum, aspirates in the lower respiratory tract, bronchoalveolar lavage, and nasopharyngeal aspirates).

How does PCR Test Works?

1. The collection of samples is carried out by using a swab to collect the respiratory material in the nose. A swab contains a smooth tip on the nase on a long, flexible handle. There are various types of nose swabs, including nasal swabs, which immediately gather a sample inside your nasals and nasopharyngeal swab that is collected through the nasal cavity. For the COVID-19 PCR test, either type of swab is adequate. The swab is then sealed in a tube and sent to a lab after collection.

2. When the sample is received by a laboratory technologist, the process called extraction takes place, in which genetic material is isolated from the sample, including the genetic material, from any virus.

3. A PCR can detect the gene in a swab, by a series of chemical processes of a specific gene from genetic material (DNA or RNA) to be detected by the fluorescent dyes (DNA or RNA).
